About Annunciation / Evangelismos
Greek Orthodox Church in Elkins Park, PA
In the 1870s, Greek immigrants settled in Philadelphia and established the Greek Orthodox Community of Philadelphia in 1901. They acquired a charter of incorporation in 1907 and converted a former Episcopal church into the Evangelismos/Annunciation Holy Temple.
In 1963, the parish divided, with some members relocating to Upper Darby and others to Elkins Park. Construction of the Hellenic Cultural Center began in 1968, and the Holy Temple opened in 1972, featuring Byzantine Paleologian-style architecture. The complex includes a fellowship hall, classrooms, a library, and parish offices. Archbishop Iakovos presided over the opening ceremony.
The complex’s design was overseen by Demetrios Siderakis, with contributions from Themis C. Pailas. The religious artifacts were designed by Nicholas Ikaris and the iconography by George Filippakis and George Gleatas, with marble imported from Greece.
Consecration of the Holy Temple occurred in 2001, coinciding with the centennial anniversary of the community’s founding. A courtyard and parking lot were completed later, enhancing the beauty of the complex. Throughout its history, the Greek Orthodox Community of Philadelphia has served as a beacon of Orthodoxy and Hellenism in the Delaware Valley.
